LEADERSHIP

CHARACTER MATTERS

"We - all of us, but especially the young - need around us individuals who possess a certain nobility, a largeness of soul, and qualities of human excellence worth imitating and striving for."

- William Bennett

Our state and our country cannot be something our leaders are not.  To restore trust in government, restore honesty, courage, compassion, self-discipline, responsibility.

We need leaders, not politicians - leaders who run to, not from. Leaders who can work with others to solve problems, who are willing to confront hard truths and accept responsibility - leaders who will work for a better union and the common good, who would risk losing for the truth.

"If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher."

Abraham Lincoln, 1858

CHARACTER MATTERS

"The life of the nation is secure only while the nation is honest, truthful and virtuous."

Frederick Douglass, 1885

"Self-differentiated leadership is about the capacity of a leader to maintain his or her self while remaining connected, a balance that no one does well but all can learn to do better.  Self-differentiation in a leader is about the capacity to see things differently, to persist boldly in the face of resistance, to be willing to be vulnerable, to learn to endure (if not come to love) solitude, and to muster up the self-regulation that is necessary when a leader's initiative inevitably triggers sabotage."

Edwin H. Friedman,

Reinventing Leadership
